Lindsey Blackhurst, Soprano

Lindsey Blackhurst is a rising, versatile coloratura soprano known for her rich timbre, clear upper extension, and her honest and engaging acting skills.  Tel Aviv City described her singing as “big-tinted and ringing,” and the Brooklyn Eagle declared her “golden soprano caught one’s attention.”

Recent seasons have included performances of Königin der Nacht (DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE) with the Tuscia Opera Festival in Viterbo, Italy; Frasquita (CARMEN), Norina – cover (DON PASQUALE) and Zerlina - cover (DON GIOVANNI), and Prima Cercatrice (SUOR ANGELICA) with Regina Opera.  Blackhurst has also sung many concert versions of roles such as Zerbinetta (ARIADNE), Konstanze (DIE ENTFÜRUNG DEM AUS SERAIL), both with New York Opera Forum; Königin der Nacht (DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE) with One World Symphony; Madame Herz (DER SCAHUSPIELDIREKTOR), and Amor/Damigella (L’INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA) with New York Lyric Opera at Symphony Space.

Blackhurst enjoys delving into contemporary work, both musical theatre and opera, and has performed in productions such as Lola in PLASTIC by Robert J. Bradshaw, the children’s opera HOUSE as Kristy the String Theory Scientist, written by Christian McLeer and in the new musical FATHER OF SONGS by Tom Slot.  In 2015, she will continue working with Slot in a staged performance of scenes from several of his new works.

Uniquely, Lindsey Blackhurst has an extensive background in both musical theatre and straight theatre, as she completed her collegiate studies as a BFA student in Theatre Performance and started her professional career in the theatre world.  She performed throughout the Denver, CO region at theaters such as Littleton Town Hall Arts Center and The Bug Theater before changing directions toward a career in opera.  Favorite roles include Lucy (YOU’RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN), Luisa (THE FANTASTICKS), Ensemble (THE LARAMIE PROJECT), Bottom (A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM), Lesly (THE HOUSE OF YES), and collaborating on devised theatre with companies such as Looking for Lilith and On Your Feet Productions.

Blackhurst often performs in concerts, such "Remembering Bernstein" with Dr. Lloyd Arriola as music director and with Staten Island’s Riverside Opera Company with the Richmond Orchestra.  Many concerts have benefitted organizations like Pencils for Promise and Supporters for the Performing Arts (Estes Park, CO). She has also performed concerts for IVAI (Tel Aviv) and at Merkin Hall with William Hobbs' inaugural season of Opera Slavica.   She also performs with NYC choruses, Musica Viva and Central City Chorus.

Blackhurst studies with Claudia Friedlander and teaches K-5 music at Greenacres Elementary School in Scarsdale, NY.
