Performer, Educator & Music Director, Voice Teacher

Giving Voice

Based in New York City, I devote my work to singing, artistry, and education. On the surface, I work as a singer in NYC, primarily with Immersion Repertory, teach K-5 music and private voice lessons, music direct youth theatre with Immersion Youth Repertory in Rochester, MN, and earned her doctorate in Music and Music Education from Teachers College - Columbia University. But these are mere manifestations of a larger purpose.

With joy, I have spent much of my life learning how to reflect on myself as a teacher, artist, and person and find myself fervently engaged in quiet activism. I find purpose and immense gratitude in my life as a musician and educator; for it is through art and education that we learn about ourselves, to be with one another, to struggle with our own thinking, and to reflect on who we are - or, at least, to continue  to grow in who we want to become. And although this life may not be loud, it is steady, and it affects lasting change.

And so, I get up in the morning and strive to put beauty and music into the world while interacting with young people in ways that foster dignity and connection.  It feels vital to ensure we have thinking, feeling, empathetic individuals in our schools, communities, country, and world. Every day, I relish the opportunity to bring joy, music, collaboration, and listening skills into my classroom, into the studios where I teach, and into the music I sing.  I listen to my students, I try to create environments in which they listen to one another, learn to work through differences, and feel empowered. As a music teacher and a teacher of singing, the real and symbolic importance of giving people a voice – both collectively and as individuals – is of the utmost importance. As a singer and artist, I strive to connect the personal with the political, the hope with the hard work it takes to affect change. We are all holistic, WHOLE, human beings and music can help illuminate and clarify who we are and how we are connected.

The arts, it has been said, cannot change the world, but they may change human beings who might change the world.
